Zegna

The Zegna story began in 1910 in Trivero, northern Italy, when 18-year-old Ermenegildo Zegna, the youngest of 10 children, began using the looms of his father’s wool mill to create quality fabrics that became known as “the most beautiful in the world”. Sourcing only the best fibres, the young entrepreneur began producing fine fabrics and by 1938 was exporting to the US. A few years later, Zegna fabrics were being sold in more than 40 countries worldwide. By the 1960s, Ermenegildo’s sons Angelo and Aldo had launched a ready-to-wear collection and made-to-measure bespoke range. Three generations on, the Zegna empire, now led by Ermenegildo’s grandson, Gildo, boasts 300 stores internationally, offering clients high-end sustainable menswear, accessories, and sportswear. With the fourth generation entering the family business, the Zegna brand is also sold through high-end retailers and online. The Zegna brand remains synonymous with luxury and innovation, as well as the kind of fine detail that the “Made in Italy” label is known for.

Percy Marks

In 1899, a young and unknown jewellery designer from New Zealand opened his namesake Sydney store. Almost 125 years later, Percy Marks remains one of Australia’s most respected family jewellery businesses. Percy was just 20 years old and from a family of jewellers when he began his Sydney business, which quickly developed a reputation for creating traditionally crafted bespoke jewellery of exceptional design, quality and beauty. Percy became known as The Opal King for his love of the darker-coloured stones and his gregarious efforts to promote opals as Australia’s national gemstone. It worked. By the 1930s, Australian opal was the rage. Percy died in 1935, the same year he was awarded King George V’s Silver Jubilee medal. Today Percy Marks is run by Percy’s great-grandson, Cameron Marks, and the highly sought-after Australian black opals remain a specialty, alongside all the other rare and magnificent gems that are unique to Australia – from South Sea pearls to the prized Argyle pink diamonds.

Bvlgari

Vibrant colours and distinctive motifs are synonymous with Bulgari style and luxury. Founded in Rome in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, the jewellery brand soon established a reputation for exquisite Italian craftsmanship and design. Unafraid to defy trends or break rules, Bulgari’s flair for crafting breathtakingly beautiful pieces continues to win over lovers of fine jewellery while also creating the icons of contemporary design. This trademark style developed in strength in the 1940s, with Bulgari’s sinuous yellow gold coils of the Serpenti creations. In the ‘50s, Bulgari introduced chromatic combinations of precious and coloured stones. Then in the early ‘70s, Bulgari expanded into Europe and the US, where the third-generation Bulgari brothers  stirred excitement with creations inspired from the Far East through to Pop Art. Next to be noticed was the Bulgari watch, which became an instant classic and design statement. The ‘80s and ‘90s pushed Bulgari’s modular jewellery to the front row as a single decorative piece for the modern woman. Unusual materials were melded with jewels and watches - steel, porcelain, silk, and wood recalibrated our sense of luxury forever.

Burberry

While the Burberry story began with the desire to design clothing that would protect people from the British weather, almost 170 years later the name Burberry – and its trademark trench coat and check fabric – is a much-admired staple of the high-couture fashion world. Thomas Burberry’s invention in the late 1800s of gabardine – the breathable, weatherproof, and hardwearing fabric that revolutionised rainwear – was followed by the creation of the classic trench coat design. Burberry’s iconic Equestrian Knight Device logo also speaks of its timeless British style and elegance. Today’s range includes leather goods, footwear, perfume, and fashion accessories such as the signature cashmere scarf collection.

Salvatori Ferragamo

Novice Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo had a vision to create and produce the world’s most beautiful shoes. Beginning with a small shoe repair business, the young Ferragamo’s journey took him from Italy to the United States and back. In 1923, Ferragamo made his way to California and Hollywood, where he handcrafted shoes and boots for the then-fledgling film industry. In 1927 he returned to Italy to start the Salvatore Ferragamo company, based in Florence, where he created high-end women’s footwear. When Ferragamo passed away in 1960 the company was taken over by his wife, Wanda, who continued the brand’s evolution. In 1965, the house launched leather goods and ready-to-wear apparel designed by Giovanna Gentile Ferragamo. At the same time, the company began the production of handbags, under the direction of Fiamma di San Giuliano Ferragamo. The 1970s saw the company diversify into men’s clothing and footwear. Today the Ferragamo luxury goods empire makes products including women’s handbags, wallets, clothing, jewellery, sunglasses, perfume and, of course, shoes.

Paspaley

The pursuit of the perfect pearl has been a journey full of passion and adventure for three generations of the Paspaley family over more than 80 years. Known for their transparent lustre and unique colour palette, Paspaley pearls are among the rarest and most sought-after in the world, appearing in the collections of Cartier, Tiffany and Co and Harry Winston, among others. Nicholas Paspaley Sr was a young entrepreneur when he arrived in Australia from Greece in 1942 and headed to the Kimberley region in the northernmost part of Western Australia. Aged 19, he bought a pearl lugger, diving for natural pearls and mother-of-pearl shell. Decades later, Paspaley realised his dream of creating cultured pearls of the same quality as his natural South Sea pearls. Today, under the chairmanship of Nicholas Paspaley Jr, those cultured pearls are regarded as being in a category of their own – Paspaley Pearls.

Chopard

The luxury Swiss timepiece brand was founded in 1860 by artisan watchmaker Louis-Ulysse Chopard. Three generations later in 1963 the company was bought by goldsmith and watchmaker Karl Scheufele III, whose family continues to run the company today. Chopard’s reputation for high-precision, ultra-thin and extremely accurate pocket watches surged. In the 1980s, convinced that a Chopard stainless steel watch would succeed, a young Karl-Friedrich Scheufele launched the now-iconic Moritz Swiss watch – an elegant, luxury sports watch. The same decade saw the launch of Caroline Scheufele’s Happy Clown classic jewellery collection. This year Chopard announced that its steel watches – including bracelets and cases – will be made from recyclable Lucent Steel.

Gucci

Synonymous with luxury and style, the iconic Italian fashion house celebrated its 100th year in 2021. Known for its high-quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and timeless designs that never ever go out of style, Gucci was founded in Florence, Italy, by Guccio Gucci. The story goes that Guccio was inspired by the luxury luggage owned by aristocrats staying at London’s Savoy Hotel, where he worked as a porter. From the beginning, the Gucci brand became the perfect fit for the pastimes of the wealthy, like horse-riding — hence the brand’s signature horsebit. Behind the scenes, Gucci has survived family feuds, take-over attempts, a near-bankruptcy, a public listing, financial turnarounds and even a murder. Yet the allure of the brand, and its extravagant, opulent designs, is enduring as Gucci continues its success as a label of choice of wealthy travellers, celebrities, and well-heeled clients.

Tom Ford

Sexy clothing, provocative statements, and racy advertising … Tom Ford is credited with bringing “sexy” back to fashion. The American fashion designer and filmmaker launched his eponymous luxury brand in 2005 after serving as the creative director at Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, where he was best known for turning the Italian fashion house into a brand worth billions of dollars. The Texas-born designer studied architecture before immersing himself in the world of fashion. After leaving Gucci, Ford settled in Los Angeles and directed and produced the highly acclaimed film, A Single Man. Afterwards, Ford refocussed on fashion, initially with cosmetics and menswear before returning to the high-octane world of glamorous womenswear. Ford’s signature style remains simple but striking. Think bold statements, like his velvet tuxedo jackets emblazoned with abstract designs and patterns. Still today, Tom Ford designs reflect the designer’s elegance, refinement, adventure, and timeless class.

Colonial Coins & Medals

Peter Brooks left behind a career at the CSIRO in 1966 to pursue his passion for the science of coins, medals and tokens, leading the young collector to open a small numismatic dealership which, over the years, has grown to become a leading destination for collectors worldwide. Brooks’s passion for coins and medals grew from his appreciation of their history and significance. As a 16-year-old visiting London, his private purchase of a mint state Charles II 1665 Pattern Farthing struck in silver remains in his collection today. The company’s distinctive logo – the crowned Portcullis of the Tower of London Mint – was inspired by the iconic Portcullis Money Series, England’s first trade coinage, struck in 1600-1601 under Queen Elizabeth I. In 2020, Charles Brooks joined the family business fulltime, bringing with him the kind of energy and passion that continues to fire Peter Brooks’s life-long interest. Charles also adds a modern perspective to the business through its online store and blog, Colonial Gazette.

Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)

Sitting majestically above the Derwent River on the outskirts of Hobart, the Museum of Old and New Art’s subterranean architecture showcases entrepreneur David Walsh’s $110 million private collection of art and antiquities. Unlike any other art museum in the world, MONA is the playground and megaphone of Walsh, who grew up in Tasmania, dropped out of university, played cards, and won, then played a bit more before eventually investing in MONA. Described as a temple to secularism, rationalism, and talking nonsense about things you don’t know very much about, MONA opened in 2011 and exhibits an eclectic range of art from ancient history to modern works, including pieces from Picasso, Warhol and Dali. It holds the world’s largest private collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts. There’s also live music, food, wine, accommodation, a library, brewery, recording studio, and tennis court. MONA should be explored — as a space of wonder and experiment. Download the MONA App before you get there. Catch the ferry from Hobart. You could speed through MONA in four hours, but it’s best to hang around and make a day of it.

The idea to build the Cube came to winemaker Chester Osborn in 2003. Inspired by the complexities and puzzles of winemaking, Chester came up with the idea of a cube-shaped building. Each of the five levels have been carefully curated to entice and excite the senses. There’s also 25 Salvador Dali bronze sculptures and graphic artworks on exhibition. And much more!

Le Labo

If you love perfume and have always wanted to curate your own bespoke fragrance, then Le Labo – French for “the lab” – awaits you. Le Labo’s collection of personal, body and home fragrances are named after the most prominent note in its composition, with the identifying number on each product revealing the total notes used to create that blend. Ingredients such as sandalwood, black tea leaves, rose centifolia, bergamot, tonka bean, juniper, petitgrain and neroli are blended, just the way you like it. Founded in New York in 2006, Le Labo has revolutionised the idea of a personal fragrance. Each perfume is delicately composed to ensure a harmonious and long-lasting scent. Le Labo boutiques operate as an open artisanal laboratory, like a lolly shop for the nose, where clients can take the time to smell and touch raw ingredients to awaken their olfactory system and trigger emotions. Each fragrance is layered with an intoxicating blend of notes, and because they’re oil-based, one spray can last you all day. If you can’t decide what you want, then Le Labo’s Discovery Set contains either five or 17 sample-size spritzes. Or try one of Le Labo’s signature fragrances, the sensual and sophisticated Santal 33.

Japingka Aboriginal Art

It’s hard to imagine a more diverse group of artists than those referred to as Australian Aboriginal – people of all ages, from teenagers through to community elders. Japingka Aboriginal Art opened in Perth in 1995 and today holds more than 4000 ethically sourced Aboriginal artworks. An ever-changing feast, the art is created by men and women, sometimes using different mediums. The artists live in remote deserts, on tropical islands, in small coastal regions as well as in towns and cities. Japingka Aboriginal Art occupies two levels of an 1890s warehouse in Freemantle. The ground floor gallery presents a broad cross-section of Aboriginal art from leading artists and regions. The two upstairs galleries present new exhibitions annually, chosen from emerging Indigenous and established communities and artists. Japingka is an active member of both the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia and the Australian Federal Government’s Indigenous Art Code. Both these industry organisations promote fair trade practices and ethical standards for the Aboriginal art industry.

Archive Fine Books

It’s everything you want a bookstore to be – crowded, quiet and with that unmistakable smell that says amazing ideas have been captured in its stored books’ pages. Archive Fine Books, one of the largest second-hand bookstores in Australia, occupies the ground floor of John Mills Himself, a heritage-listed building in the heart of the Brisbane CBD. Fittingly, John Mills was a printer in the 1920s and the store still owns three copies of titles published by Mills: Reflections by Will H. Clarke, Secrets Revealed by J.W. Crsbie and Journey into Desolation by former Queensland politician Bruce Pie. These books may be viewed on request but are not for sale. Naturally, the bookstore is divided into genre: literature, philosophy, politics, sport, military history, westerns, Australiana, esoterica, religion, law, business, science, science-fiction, fantasy, popular fiction, biography, music, quilting and many others. Established in 1985, the store has had several bookish owners, each one contributing to its reputation as a Brisbane icon. Hamish Alcorn bought the business in 2008 and since then has organised more than half a million books and with partner Dawn Albinger has grown the antiquarian side of the business. If you can’t get to the store, browse online for antiquarian books and other treasures.

Berkelouw Books

The story so far is that six generations of the Berkelouw family have been book traders. With a stock list of more than two million books – new, secondhand and antiquarian – the Sydney-based family business operates across NSW and has one store at Eumundi in Queensland. The Berkelouw family’s love affair with books began in Holland in 1812, where Solomon Berkelouw traded theology books. After his untimely death, Solomon’s son Carel took on his father’s trade, opening a store in Rotterdam. Carel’s son Hartog was the first family member to issue catalogues, gaining Berkelouw an international reputation. With the business decimated by World War II, Isidoor Berkelouw emigrated to Australia. Opening a store in Sydney, Isidoor’s first catalogue captured the attention of book collectors around the country. The business flourished and Isidoor’s sons Henry and Leo followed in his footsteps as booksellers. In 1994, the sixth generation, Paul, Robert and David Berkelouw, opened its now landmark store in Paddington, Sydney. Today Berkelouw Books is Australia’s largest rare and antiquarian, second-hand and new book trader.

Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre

With a commanding outlook over the snaking Tweed River and magnificent caldera, Tweed Regional Gallery is arguably the leading regional gallery in Australia, a ranking solidified in 2014 with the opening of its annex Margaret Olley Art Centre. The architecturally award-winning gallery building opened in 2004 and houses an outstanding collection of Australian portraiture and regional works of note. It also hosts high calibre travelling exhibitions such as the Doug Moran Portrait Prize and the travelling Archibald Prize. But it is the Margaret Olley Art Centre, with its meticulous re-creation of rooms and their contents from her home studio in Duxford Street, Paddington, Sydney, that draws busloads of visitors year-round. And deservedly so. Margaret Olley, who was born in Kyogle and grew up in Murwillumbah, is Australia’s most admired painter of still life and interiors, much loved for her intimate, perceptive artworks. A bohemian and pioneering woman of Australian art, visitors can view for themselves her artwork, paints, furniture, ornaments, crockery, cutlery, vases, flowers, and more. The gallery has a gift shop and restaurant with balcony dining – the perfect place to muse after touring the gallery.

Hill of Content Bookshop

Melbourne’s oldest bookstore, Hill of Content Bookshop, celebrated its 100th birthday last year. The little bookshop is one of Australia’s finest, enjoyed by book lovers across the country and from around the globe. There’s always a story to tell, and the bookshop’s founder Albert Henry Spencer once revealed his account of the store’s beginnings, famously revealing that its name came to him during a walk in the Fitzroy Gardens when “the elm trees and the plane trees and the poplars said, Call it the Hill of Content”. Spencer opened the bookshop in 1922 at its 86 Bourke Street location, where it continues to operate today. Over the years there have been many famous figures – writers, poets, artists and entertainers – who have signed its Visitors Book, including Sidney Nolan, Barry Humphries, Fred Williams, Patrick White, Louis Armstrong, E. Annie Prouix, Robin Boyd, Seamus Heaney, Jan Morris and Vikram Seth. With a broad and discerning range of books on offer, Hill of Content is a must-visit destination for the discerning reader.
