Venture Capital Clear Vision

By Michael Moritz and Doug Leone

In the world of venture capital, the secret to success lies in a clear vision, an unconventional recruitment policy, a lot of resilience and a little luck. Just ask the partners of Sequoia Capital, past and present.

Michael Moritz, partner of Sequoia Capital, talks about his journey from starting out as a journalist to switching to the venture capital industry. Moritz explains the factors in what has made Sequoia an enduring organisation, including the key factor of never losing sight of where your company wants to go. Although different challenges arise and circumstances are constantly changing, having a clear sense of where a company wants to head in is necessary in ensuring its success. Moritz also states on what Sequoia looks for to identify high potential talent, and that is people who are young that Sequoia can help grow and develop organically, who go onto remain loyal to the company. Touching on the gender equality prevalent in the industry, although improving immensely, Moritz states that the change in the company can only change as fast as the rest of society.

American billionaire venture capitalist and former managing partner of Sequoia Capital, Doug Leone, although contributes his success to luck, claims that taking risks and hustling is also incredibly important in being successful. Leone explains how the success of Sequoia can be attributed to founder of Sequoia, Don Valentine’s, appreciation for markets and the company’s ability to recruit non-conventional people. When Sequoia hires those non-conventional, individual creators and shows them how to work as a team, it leads to a high-performance culture that fulfils the company’s goal: a team-oriented spirit to help founders build great companies.
